Five residency opportunities in Asia are available through the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s 2013 artist-in-residence programme. Deadline 24 August.
For the first time, Asia:NZ is offering a residency in Malaysia, at Shalini Ganendra Fine Art in Kuala Lumpur.
Artists are also invited to apply for Asia:NZ and Creative New Zealand’s artist-in-residence opportunities at 1 Shanthi Road studio and gallery in Bangalore, India; Goyang Art Studio in Seoul, South Korea; S-AiR Sapporo in Hokkaido, Japan; and the Taipei Artist Village in Taiwan.
The application deadline is 5pm, Friday August 24, 2012. The successful candidates will work at the organisations for a minimum of two months.
Asia:NZ’s Director of Culture Jennifer King says the residencies offer artists fresh inspirations, open up dialogues between cultures, and provide opportunities to collaborate with artists from around the world.
“Residencies offer New Zealand artists the opportunity to absorb a whole range of new perspectives and ideas, which will likely impact on their work in all sorts of interesting ways for many years to come.”
Creative New Zealand agrees, “Residencies like these are powerful opportunities for New Zealand artists to open doors into audiences and institutions they may never have been able to access otherwise,” says Gail Richards, Senior Manager, Arts Funding. “We hope the artists will seize this chance”.
Christchurch photographer Tim Veling travelled to Hokkaido earlier this year through the S-AiR Sapporo artist-in-residence exchange, and chose toexhibit a selection of the resulting photographs in Christchurch in June.
“Before I left for Japan, I sensed my working methods and vision had grown stagnant and altogether formulaic.
“Being thrust into and inspired by Japanese culture – experiencing firsthand in galleries, museums and people’s homes, new ways of working and communicating ideas – forced me to evaluate, unpick and reformulate my artistic vision.”
