Berlin Writer's Residency 2022/23

To apply for the Berlin Writer's Residency you must be:
- an established writer AND
- a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
The residency is open to writers working in genres including but not limited to: autobiography/memoir, biography, children’s fiction, creative non-fiction, essays, fiction, graphic novels with a strong literary element, histories, literary criticism and poetry.
Previous recipients of the Residency are not eligible to apply.
Track record
You must have a track record of experience and success — this means you must have:
- recognition from peers or experts
- achieved a degree of critical or sales success
- specialised training or practical experience

Breaches of agreements
You can't apply if you, your organisation, or key members of your project team are in breach of the conditions of a current funding agreement.
If you receive funding, be sure to read all the terms and conditions in your funding agreement and note your reporting deadlines so you don't breach the agreement. If we consider the terms and conditions of funding to be seriously breached, which includes missing the deadline for reporting, we reserve the right to terminate the grant and seek repayment.

The primary aim of the residency is for a writer to work on an approved project in a new environment, and to complete, or substantially complete, a body of writing during the residency.
An anticipated benefit of the residency is developing the potential of the writer through exposure to new cultures and new ideas.
The residency includes an apartment in the heart of Berlin and a stipend of $40,000. This stipend is to be used for the writer's travel to Berlin, living and material costs for up to 11 months between 1 November 2023 - 30 September 2024. You must have health insurance. This cost of this and any additional expenses must be met by you.
Benefits to New Zealand arts
Your project or activities must directly benefit New Zealand arts, artists or practitioners.

Application questions
The Berlin Writer's Residency application form includes the following sections:
Idea
In this section, you explain what the central idea or kaupapa of your project. You also tell us:
- How your project will achieve the Creative New Zealand outcome: High quality New Zealand art is developed
- What benefits you think this residency will provide your project and/or future plans (e.g access to different writing communities/research facilities)?
Process
In this section, tell us where, when and how you plan to deliver your project, including:
- Details of any special requirements such as additional travel and research.
- An outline of future plans for the completed project (such as an expression of interest from your publisher).
People
In this section, briefly tell us about yourself. You can also tell us about any other people or organisations who will be involved in delivering your project.
Budget
In this section, enter $40,000 as the amount you are requesting from Creative New Zealand.
Support Material
In this section, you add the required documents and support material to your application.
You must attach:
- A COVID-19 contingency plan (read more below)
- Up to 10 pages of the proposed work in progress
- Up to two letters of recommendation or support from your publisher or respected members of the literary sector.
These letters should refer to the project you are proposing in your application - Your full literary CV.
If relevant to your project, you should also attach:
- A timeline for your proposed project
- Invitations or written agreements to create, present or distribute your work.

Berlin Writer's Residency assessment criteria
Your application is assessed by external peer assessors using the following criteria.
- Benefit – There is a clear benefit for the artist’s project/idea through this residency.
- Alignment – There is good alignment between this residency and the artist’s future plans.
- Planning – The planning and timeline is realistic and achievable.
- Capability - The artist has appropriate experience to deliver the project.
- Strategic fit – The project aligns to Creative New Zealand’s strategic outcome of high quality New Zealand art is developed.

After the round closes, staff check your application is eligible before it moves to peer assessment.
We will let you know the result of your application on 30 September 2022. The successful applicant will be published on our Results page.
