Toi Tipu Toi Rea Artist programme

Open for applications today, Toi Tipu Toi Rea is Creative New Zealand’s emerging Māori artists’ programme. In 2022 Toi Tipu Toi Rea has expanded; in addition to providing contestable funding, a new business-focussed capability support programme has been launched to help artists develop the enterprise skills they need for a successful career in the arts.

Comprising three wānanga, the Toi Tipu Toi Rea support programme will teach participants how to build networks, write effective funding applications and develop business skills to set them on the road to self-sufficiency.

Kereama Te Ua, Arts Practice Director, Māori, says the initiative is about responding to the needs of younger and emerging artists.

“In 2013 our research told us there just wasn’t enough support for emerging Māori artists, and that’s how Toi Tipu Toi Rea came to be. But beyond pūtea to support their mahi, we’ve seen there’s a real need and desire to build infrastructure for artists – to connect them to one another so they can become their own source of strength,” says Kereama.

Manaakitanga and accessibility are at the centre of the programme which is about fostering community and interconnectedness between practitioners.

Applications for the capability building programme open today, Monday 1st of August.

An online live Q&A explaining the programme will take place this evening at 7pm via Facebook.

Entry onto the support programme is automatic if applicants meet the criteria: have completed an undergraduate qualification, are a New Zealand citizen and tangata whenua Māori.

Applications for the business-focused capability building support programme close at 1pm on the 31st of August.
