Creative New Zealand is working with the SoundCheck Aotearoa collective to address concerns that have arisen within Aotearoa’s music industry including sexual harm, inequitable representation and systemic discrimination.
“To value the arts, we must value the artists and ensure they and all sector practitioners can work without harm to their health, safety and wellbeing. Creative New Zealand’s values of Mana Toi and Tauutuutu speak to the importance of respect and care in our relationships. Creative New Zealand has joined this collective of organisations to address significant concerns raised by artists and practitioners working in music in Aotearoa," said Stephen Wainwright, Chief Executive - Pou Whakarae.
SoundCheck Aotearoa includes a collective of organisations working in music: Recorded Music NZ, APRA AMCOS NZ, NZ Music Commission, Music Managers Forum NZ and Independent Music NZ in collaboration with Te Māngai Pāho, Māori Music Industry Coalition, NZ On Air, SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music and NZ Promoters Association.
Launched in November last year, the first key initiative of the group is Safety in Workplaces – an initiative to prevent sexual harm in the music community and provide support for those who have experienced it. More information on this initiative will be provided as details are confirmed.
