We’ve made changes to our general Funding Agreement, effective from 22 October.
As a public funder, it’s important to us that our Funding Agreement for projects that we support remains fit for purpose. We’ve made some changes to further strengthen the agreement and clearly outline our expectations of applicants and projects.
The Funding Agreement is a document used widely across our Grants programme, Special Opportunities, Initiatives & Pilots, International and Capability Building programmes. The new agreement will be in effect from Arts Grants 2021/22 round 2 notifications, 22 October 2021.
What’s different
The revised agreement includes our expectations for funded applicants to:
- comply with all relevant laws including:
- health and safety legislation
- protection of young people and vulnerable adults
- copyright legislation
- keep full and accurate records related to the project
- report on their grant within 8 weeks from completion date (changed from 12 weeks)
- confirm all information provided is true and not misleading
- confirm all necessary rights and consents have been obtained, and that the project will not violate or infringe rights of any third party
- confirm they're not disqualified from accepting a grant.
The agreement also outlines the relationship between parties and outlines grounds for default and termination of a grant.

Why did Creative New Zealand make these changes?
We undertook a review of our existing Funding Agreement to further strengthen the agreement and clearly outline our expectations of applicants and projects we support.
We felt it was an appropriate time to review the agreement, given the increasing expectations on public funders such as Creative New Zealand, and the level of scrutiny on the use of public funds.
When will the updated Funding Agreement start being issued?
The revised Funding Agreement will be in effect from Arts Grants 2021/22 round 2 notifications, 22 October 2021. All existing signed Funding Agreements remain valid for the duration of the agreed timeframe.
Is my current Funding Agreement still valid (for funded applicants)?
Yes, if you’ve signed and retuned an existing Funding Agreement, this remains valid for the term of your funded project.
Will you be making changes to other Creative New Zealand Funding Agreements?
We’re keen to ensure a broadly consistent approach to funding agreements where this makes sense but also ensure agreements reflect the nature of the funding relationship and are proportional to the amount of funding/risk.
We’ll consider including new clauses in other funding agreements when they roll over.
Does the agreement make it harder to access funding?
Not at all. The revised Funding Agreement doesn’t increase barriers to accessing our funding. The funding agreement is the last part of the application process – in other words, after applications have gone through the assessment process and have been successful.
