New Zealand artists will soon get the chance to be inspired by some of our most spectacular natural environments through a Department of Conservation (DOC) and Creative New Zealand initiative.
A fusion of conservation and creativity, Wild Creations supports artists to be inspired by experiencing the people, stories and challenges of New Zealand’s unique natural and historic heritage. They may work in any artform or area of arts practice supported by Creative New Zealand.
Artist experiences could include anything from spending time with a threatened species recovery team and tracking native bird predators, to accompanying volunteers on conservation projects.
Wild Creations builds on an artist in residency programme of the same the name that was offered between 2002 and 2012. The re-invigorated scheme will be similar but much broader in scope.
There are a wide range of experiences on offer including:
- Experience of a place of particular significance to Māori
- A community group/volunteering/immersion experience
- An iwi engagement experience related to sites important to Tangata Whenua
- An experience involving a historic icon site managed by DOC
- A threatened species experience, such as working alongside the Kakapo recovery team
- An experience involving an island, such as being involved in tracking and trapping predators
- A coastal experience, such as being exposed to marine mammal monitoring
- An urban explorer experience, which brings people to the natural environment
- A remote experience such as staying in a warden’s hut over the winter.
