Dame Doreen Blumhardt, pioneer of art education and founder of the Blumhardt Foundation which she set up to foster art in New Zealand, sadly passed away over the weekend, aged 95.
Dame Doreen Blumhardt worked as a ceramicist, becoming one of the countrys most distinguished potters. She was also an arts educator for 70 years, and one of her legacies, the Blumhardt Creative New Zealand Curatorial Internship, runs at TheNewDowse Gallery in Lower Hutt.
Dame Doreen Blumhardt was awarded New Zealands highest honour, the Order of New Zealand, in the New Years Honours in 2007. In a media statement Prime Minister John Key says "Doreen received her well-deserved title of Dame at Old St Pauls in August and that capped off a lifelong passion for the arts that saw her internationally recognised."
A funeral service will be held for Dame Doreen Blumhardt at Old St Pauls in Wellington on Thursday.
