Key themes and round observations
This opportunity is offered once every three years as part of the For the Arts funding programmes. The Fund will next be offered in 2027.
The Fund supports the delivery of a range of opportunities for artists and practitioners to create work or develop their practice or skills within different communities across artforms.
The Fund received significant interest from providers across the motu and most applications were from organisations; applications were especially high to our General Arts funding pool.
There was a mixture of new and existing opportunities across all art forms with the majority (77%) offering opportunities to both early career and established practitioners.
Most of the applications (64%) were to support Residencies; 26% were Fellowships and 10% were for Internships.
When deciding on which applications to fund, the assessment panel considered:
- the range of recommended residencies, internships, or fellowships, including their demographic spread
- needs within different artform eco-systems and whether artists and practitioners will be well-served through the recommended residencies, internships, or fellowships
- how the residencies, internships, or fellowships will support the development of the artform and its infrastructure
- the amount and type of financial contribution or co-investment
Applications were of high merit and funding was very competitive.
Successful applications are mainly for established opportunities based on the proven impacts for practitioners, their critical support of arts infrastructure and identified needs within the artform. Most of the supported opportunities are for residencies, although there are three training opportunities that support career pathways in targeted art forms. There is representation across the art forms and across the mōtu. Most opportunities are located in Tāmaki, although many of these are available to artists and practitioners located nationally or internationally.
Strong applications under the Residencies, Internships and Fellowships Fund tended to:
- clearly articulate the benefit and impact of the opportunity on the recipient.
- clearly identify the communities they served and were specific in their design of the residency, fellowship or internship in delivering to the needs or opportunities of those communities.
- provide robust and thorough evidence of planning to support successful delivery, including a safe, inclusive, and accessible environment with appropriate support throughout.
- provide detailed budgets and evidence of strong co-investment (financial or non-financial) which was above the minimum requirement of 10%.
- demonstrate strong alignment with Creative New Zealand’s Interim Investment Intention (General Arts funding pool) Te Hā o ngā Toi - Māori Arts Strategy (Ngā toi Māori funding pool) and Pacific Arts strategy (Pacific Arts funding pool).
