Arts Grants offer short-term project funding between $5,000 to $75,000 for New Zealand artists, arts practitioners, arts organisations, groups and collectives. This funding enables more sustainable careers, encourages innovation and the development of arts practice, and provides opportunities for diverse communities to access the arts.
Who got funded this round
Arts Grants round 1 attracted considerable interest, with many high-calibre applications received, requesting more than four times the available budget.
In 2021/22 we had $17.7 million available to invest in Arts Grants. This year we only have $9.08 million to invest across 4 rounds. This is because in 2021/22 we had additional money to invest in Arts Grants as a result of the one-off funding boost we received from the Government to help the arts sector respond to the challenges of the Delta variant of COVID. Unfortunately, this year we couldn't boost funding in the same way and have had to return to our original budget - as a result, we couldn't support many of the excellent applications we received.

Arts Council Chair Caren Rangi recently said, “We’ve been saying to the arts sector for the past couple of years that while we’re grateful to have been able to draw on our financial reserves to support the arts community through the impacts of COVID-19, we also knew that it would hamper our ability to sustain long-term funding and support. This year we’re particularly challenged by our reduced financial capacity, and the reality is we’ll continue to face these challenges.”
