Objectspace, White_mess, Movement of the Human, and EBKM will present work overseas next year, supported through our Global Networks Presentation Fund.

The Global Networks Presentation Fund is designed to support relationships and networks fostered by our artists and curators over many years and supported through our international initiatives. Each of theprojects funded for 2023 presentations illustrate the ways that artists, curators and presenters are responding in innovative ways to working internationally.

It’s exciting to see that each project includes elements of collaboration between artists from Aotearoa, international artists and the presenting partners.

Objectspace were funded for two exhibitions by Ron Te Kawa in Norway in 2023. The exhibitions are the next step in solidifying strong connections between Aotearoa and Norway, focusing on craft practice.. These relationships have been supported through the Te Manu Ka Tau and international market development initiatives.

Zoe Black, Deputy Director of Objectspace says, “Creative New Zealand’s support for Maungarongo Te Kawa’s exhibition presentation in Norway is incredibly valuable and will ensure the work will be shown with the utmost care”. This project includes public programming, a publication and involves Te Kawa working with local artists.

It will enable community connections as part of the exhibition kaupapa, giving us the opportunity to strengthen understanding of indigenous worldviews through collaborations with Sami artists kanohi ki te kanohi.” says Zoe.

White_mess (Alice Canton) will collaborate with the local Chinese community in Buenos Aires to develop and present OTHER [chinese], a live documentary theatre show, in early 2023. Alice developed this project with international Producer, Shoshana Polanco. Shoshana visited Aotearoa and saw the work as a Te Manu Ka Tau delegate, after which Alice then met Shoshana at APAM (Australia Performing Arts Market).

For almost three years we have continued to build our relationship,” says Alice “Following the support from the Global Networks Presentation Fund, I'm so thrilled to be invited to travel to Latin America in February next year to present in Festival International de Buenos Aires (FIBA) with my work, OTHER [chinese].” Alice will be in Argentina and Brazil for almost 5 weeks, developing the show for the local Chinese community, and a Spanish and Portuguese-speaking audience.

Movement of the Human (MOTH) have been funded to rework and present Tōrua in association with Home of the Arts (HOTA), Gold Coast. Malia Johnston, founder and creator, says “Support for this project allows the development of international partnerships and creative collaboration. It allows our company to research and experience new greener ways to tour our work - where international collaboration is at the heart of the creative work and practice of the project.”

The presentation sees MOTH and local performers combining their practices for a mix of group, solo and duet pieces to be presented across the HOTA site for a series of schools and general public audiences.

It means MOTH will begin a relationship with HOTA that we aim to be a long term relationship,” says Malia. “This opportunity will allow our dancers to collaborate with local dancers whilst also sharing their unique perspectives and practices with new audiences.”

Eleanor Bishop and Karin McCracken (EBKM) were recipients of a contribution towards travel costs for a five-centre tour of YES YES YES in Australia in 2023. EBKM have been building their relationships with Australian presenters and this tour will see the artists build their knowledge and skillset around the Australian artistic/cultural context. EBKM’s existing social practice methodologies will be extended through working with a diverse group of Australian young people. “Creative New Zealand support for our five-centre tour of Australia with Yes Yes Yes has been essential to the tour going ahead and has allowed us to finalise planning with the presenters and begin making travel arrangements,” they said.

“The support is highly valued at such a critical time following the pandemic. We are thrilled this tour can go ahead, as it has been in train since we pitched YES YES YES at APAM in early 2020 (with Creative New Zealand support) and is a major step towards achieving our international market development goals, which identifies Australia as a key market for EBKM.”
