New digital capability initiative register your interest from 14 March

The arts and cultural sector of Aotearoa New Zealand remains heavily reliant on opportunities for live performance. The impact that such reliance has on the sector’s resilience and prosperity has been painfully evident over the past 2 years as we navigate through COVID-19. At the same time, the possibilities offered by digital technology continue to grow exponentially.

Through a new digital capability initiative, we're aiming to connect the arts and cultural sector with emerging digital technology in order to transform the sectors’ capability to create, to distribute and to reach new audiences for which live performances are inaccessible.

Our Arts Council has approved us taking a first step to seek expressions of interest from those who are able to or could provide services in this space. We’ll be seeking Registrations of Interest (ROI) from 14 March. We’ll share more details when registrations open. In the meantime, here’s some high-level information about what we're hoping to achieve.

What's involved?

We anticipate the services offered through this mahi will include:

  • commissioning digital content/art across multiple platforms including providing immersive or interactive experiences
  • brokering partnerships and networks nationally and globally to develop or realise a digital arts project
  • providing digital engagement skill development including e-commerce platforms, digital rights, Intellectual Property, preservation and protection of Mātauranga Māori
  • developing new business models for monetising digital arts experiences.

What outcomes do we want to see?

The outcomes delivered by this initiative will include:

  • digital content being more broadly available to New Zealanders including those with disabilities and communities of high users (e.g., young Pasifika artist/arts organisations)
  • greater resilience and prosperity for arts cultural practitioners and organisations.

What’s happening next?

In the week commencing 14 March 2022 we plan to release a call for Registrations of Interest (ROI). This part of the process will focus on the attributes we’re seeking from potential operators in this space, which could include establishing a digital arts entity. The ROI will close on Thursday 14 April.

From the ROIs, a shortlist of respondents will be invited to respond to a Request for Proposal (RFP). More details will be provided in the ROI.
