A total of eight places are available for New Zealand ‘First Nations’ artists/producers and ‘First Timers’ at the Australia Performing Arts Market’s (APAM) first Gathering event at the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts (Asia TOPA) in 2020.
APAM’s Gatherings are hosted events at established festivals across Australia, such as Asia TOPA and Darwin Festival. Combining elements of traditional performing arts markets with full-length public performances, they are designed to build greater opportunities for collaboration across the performing arts. APAM’s Gathering at Asia TOPA in Melbourne, 24 – 28 February 2020, will be the first in a series of annual events planned.
Following a partnership signed with APAM in August, Creative New Zealand has secured opportunities for New Zealand delegates to get the most out of this important market for contemporary performing arts professionals in the Asia Pacific region. These opportunities include taking part in APAM’s First Timers Programme and its First Nations Producers Programme.
New Zealand works have also been selected to be profiled at the Gathering (more details below).
First Timers Programme
There are four places available for New Zealand artists/producers to participate in APAM’s First Timers mentorship programme, which matches market development experts with first time attendees.
Mentees will receive guidance prior to and during the Gathering, to clarify their strategic market development goals and opportunities to connect with key national and international networks. Creative New Zealand will provide each successful delegate $2,000 towards registration and travel costs.
How to apply
- New Zealand applicants must first register to attend the Gathering (registrations are now open on the APAM website) before submitting an Expression of Interest (EOIs) for the First Timers Programme via the APAM website.
- EOIs for the First Timers Programme open 2 December and close on 13 January 2020.
- All applications will be assessed by APAM with input from the Curatorial Panel.
First Nations Producers Programme
Creative New Zealand will also offer support to four Māori producers or self-producing Māori artists, to participate in APAM’s First Nations Producers Programme. Creative New Zealand’s support covers $2,000 towards registration and travel costs for each participant.
The programme covers multi-artform markets and will bring together a network of national and international producers for knowledge-sharing and peer-networking opportunities. It includes a one-day intensive on 23 February 2020, followed by daily touchpoints throughout the APAM Gathering to offer both continued peer learning and support from experienced First Nations producers. Participants also have the opportunity to refine their market development plans in preparation for the APAM Gathering.
How to apply
- Submit an Expression of Interest (EOIs) for the First Nations Producers Programme via the APAM website.
- EOIs open 2 December and close on 16 December 2019.
- Note: registration to the Gathering is automatic for successful delegates.
- All applications will be assessed by APAM with input from the Curatorial Panel.
New Zealand works selected for APAM Profiles at the Gathering
In August, Creative New Zealand announced an opportunity encouraging New Zealand artists/companies to apply to Profile sessions at the APAM Gathering. There were three types of Profile sessions: Pitches, Snapshot and Tour-Ready, with up to six spaces supported by Creative New Zealand available.

Snapshot
The first Profile session of the Tour-ready works at APAM will be hosted by Steph Walker, Auckland Arts Festival, who was nominated by Creative New Zealand through its APAM partnership to be part of Curatorial Panel for the APAM Gathering.
