Eminent Wellington artist and sculptor Michel Tuffery M.N.Z.M. opens a series of new works exploring the decline of biodiversity in Aotearoa. His Exhibition ‘Lost and Found’ opens at the NZ Portrait Gallery, 27 June – 3 July, near his large Nga Kina public sculpture on the capital’s waterfront. The works on show are a culmination of his five weeks as Artist in Residence at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School in Wellington.
“I’ve had an amazing time researching, teaching and collaborating with the talented tamariki, staff and wider school community as part of the residency. It’s been humbling to have been offered the opportunity to participate and I'm sending out a giant fa'afetai lava to all at Marsden School’, said Tuffery, recipient of the Creative New Zealand Contemporary Pacific Artist Award 2010.
The environment and conservation have been a long standing narrative within Tuffery’s art practice. Through his engagement Tuffery collaborated in various projects with students in response to the lost and found fauna and to our native birds of Aotearoa.
“It was wonderful to have Michel run a collaborative workshop, as part of his Residency, for Year 6 – 8 students from seven different Primary Schools”, said John Denton, Head of Visual Arts at Marsden School. “The students involved thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the outcome of the morning was quite brilliant”.
Tuffery’s new body of print and bronze works and the combined collaborative work will be on show at the residency Exhibition.
As part of the exhibition, the Marsden School is also presenting a free Family Concert showcasing instrumental and voice of talented students on Saturday, 2 July from 1-2pm.
