SOUNZ Community Commission celebrates 10 years

In 2009 SOUNZ will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the SOUNZ Community Commission. This project, funded by a generous and committed anonymous donor, has proved an effective way to bring together amateur musicians and professional composers to create new works.

From Gisborne to Wanaka and Nelson to Auckland musicians and composers have used this opportunity to create an amazing variety of works.

From the first award in 1999 to Jonathan Besser for the Gisborne Millennium Parade, to massed recorders in Christchurch (Helen Bowater 2001), a work in braille for Auckland choristers (Ross Carey 2005) and conducting ‘cooks’ spoiling an orchestral broth in Lower Hutt (Claire Cowan 2007), the SOUNZ Community Commission has proved to be an entertaining and educative project.

Last year the applications so impressed our benefactor that he chose two: a field recording project, Shifting Inner City Sound Plains with Sam Hamilton and Cross Street Studios Collective in Auckland; and music for a new theatre work based on the events at Passchendaele from Dramatix Theatre Company in Nelson and composer TJ Ramsay.
SOUNZ is now receiving applications for the 10th SOUNZ Community Commission, and we are looking forward to some very special proposals that will truly make this 10th SOUNZ Community Commission a celebrated collaboration!
