Wellington’s Lily Hacking is the fourth recipient of the Blumhardt Foundation’s Curatorial Internship funded by Creative New Zealand. A legacy of New Zealand potter Dame Doreen Blumhardt’s commitment to arts education, the internship provides a rare opportunity for an aspiring curator to develop their skills alongside experienced practitioners, in a contemporary gallery setting. Lily will begin work at The Dowse in May, under the mentorship of Senior Curator, Emma Bugden. Emma joins The Dowse on April 1 after a period as Director of Artspace in Auckland.
26 year old Lily is an arts historian and writer who grew up in Horokiwi and recently graduated from Victoria University with a BA in Art History (Hons). She is also about to embark on her masters programme and plans to split the 12 week full-time internship at The Dowse into a part time role throughout 2011. Lily says she is very excited to have been selected from such a talented group of applicants and is looking forward to developing an exhibition concept she “already has in mind”. Working closely with Emma, Lily will curate her own exhibition at The Dowse early in 2012.

The 2009 Blumhardt intern was Reuben Friend, now curator of Maori and Pacific Art for The Deane Gallery at City Gallery Wellington. Reuben will be remembered at The Dowse for his popular exhibition, Plastic Maori . Jaqui Knowles was the 2007 intern, she now works as Curator at the Museum of Wellington City and Sea, and Grant Thompson was the inaugural Blumhardt recipient. Grant is an Auckland jeweler who is Head of The Manukau School of Visual Arts, at Auckland University.
Prior to Artspace, Emma Bugden spent two and a half years as Curator at the Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts in Manukau City. Emma has extensive experience as a curator and manager in contemporary art institutions throughout New Zealand, from the grassroots artist initiative The Honeymoon Suite in Dunedin to working as the Director of The Physics Room and curator at City Gallery Wellington.
