New Zealand jewellery and design will be featuring strongly at a major international trade fair to be held in Munich next month (March 2013).
With support from Creative New Zealand, seven New Zealand jewellers, designers and artists will be attending and exhibiting at the Talentè andSchmuck showcases, held annually as part of the renowned International Trade Fair for the Skilled Trades.
At Talentè will be paper artist Fatemeh Aghahasan (Auckland), typographer Tamsin Fraser (Auckland), textile artist Briar Mark (Auckland) and wood artist Hayden Maunsell (Napier). Meanwhile at Schmuck will be Kristin D’Agostino from Auckland and Wellington-based husband and wife Karl Fritsch and Lisa Walker (the latter is independently funded).
In addition, Auckland-based jeweller Warwick Freeman will be at Schmuck where he has been invited to exhibit as a ‘modern classic’.
“I’m the ‘Klassiker der Moderne’ artist for 2013. It means you have been around the field long enough to be considered classic – actually it’s a fabulous honour. I’m very chuffed. I’ve been asked for a small survey of about 30 works covering my making career - so pieces from the early 1980s through to one I’m still finishing,” says Warwick Freeman.
Creative New Zealand is supporting the artists’ participation with a $38,500 contribution to airfares and accommodation during the fair, which runs from 6-12 March 2013.
In a first for New Zealand the Handshake exhibition of work by 12 contemporary jewellers has also been offered a prime position alongside the Talentè and Schmuck exhibitions. The exhibition is being supported with a $42,000 Arts Grant from Creative New Zealand.
Handshake is a three year mentoring and exhibition project which enables emerging talent to be mentored by jewellers of international renown. The exhibition in Munich will be followed by exhibitions at Studio 2017, Sydney and Objectspace, Auckland.
“We look forward to all these artists taking advantage of a growing European interest in New Zealand art, which has been generated by having our artists regularly showcase their work at this influential fair,” says Creative New Zealand Chief Executive Stephen Wainwright.
This is the fifth year Creative New Zealand has supported New Zealand artists to participate in Talentè.
Talentè is one of Europe’s most prestigious showcases for emerging talent in design, including craft and object art, and technology, while Schmuck features the best in contemporary jewellery from throughout the world.
