Proposal for Wairarapa amalgamation supported

The Local Government Commission’s draft proposal for an amalgamated Wairarapa District Council has been welcomed by Creative New Zealand.

In a submission, Creative New Zealand said that by pooling resources, removing duplication of roles and using economies of scale, a consolidated council would be better able to deliver core services while taking into account the cultural interests of its people and communities.

The amalgamation of South Wairarapa District Council, Carterton District Council and the Masterton District Council would also remove the issue of siloed funding for organisations, groups and individuals which span the Wairarapa.

Creative New Zealand has separate agreements with each council to deliver funding for community arts via the Creative Communities Scheme.

An amalgamated council may also provide stronger support for Toi Wairarapa which operates to grow and promote the capacity of the creative sector throughout the Wairarapa, which in turn would support better delivery of the arts in the region.
