Curator residency opportunity in Japan open for applications
A residency opportunity of up to two and a half months for young (35 and under) professional museum or gallery curators is being offered as part of the JENESYS Programme, administered by the Japan Foundation in partnership with the Asia New Zealand Foundation.
This Programme is being offered in 13 Asia Pacific countries including New Zealand.
The residency, available for a period between May and the end of July 2011, will be hosted by a museum or gallery in Japan appropriate to the interests of the successful candidate. The host institution will provide the recipient with opportunities to develop exhibition ideas, exchange ideas for collaboration, develop networks, and work on other activities that may enhance communication and understanding among their creative peers.
The recipient will be encouraged to present the outcomes of his or her residency experiences in the forms of a public event in Japan as well as in New Zealand after they return.
The curator will receive a return economy airfare between Japan and New Zealand, accommodation, and a stipend of 240,000 JPY per month covering per diems and production costs. The minimum stay is one month, and the curator must end the residency by the end of July.
Professional curators with a record of achievement in their field are invited to submit a written application to Asia New Zealand Foundation by no later than 5pm on Friday, January 14, 2011.
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, residing in New Zealand and able to exercise a degree of autonomy and self reliance.
A panel appointed by the Asia New Zealand Foundation will select a shortlist of candidates, from which the Japan Foundation and the host institution will make a choice. Selection criteria will include:
•a specific rationale for wishing to be resident in Japan;
•record of achievement in curatorial practice
•an understanding of the aims of the JENESYS Programme and the Asia New Zealand Foundation;
•an understanding of the environment and cultures of contemporary Japan.
Timing:
•Application deadline January 14, 2011.
•Successful candidate advised Monday February 14, 2011.
•Residency for up to two and a half months between May to end-July, 2011.
Please fill out the Japan Foundation application form provided and send three copies of the supporting material requested. Please also include letters of support.
Please DO NOT send material which is spiral bound or in clear-files. Support material will not be returned. PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE ORIGINAL MATERIAL IN AN APPLICATION.

About the JENESYS Programme:
At the 2nd East Asia Summit held in January 2007, H.E. Mr Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan, announced the launching of a large-scale youth exchange initiative totalling USD 315 million, under which approximately 6,000 youths mainly from EAS member countries (ASEAN, Australia, China, India, Korea and New Zealand) would be invited to Japan over the next five years. http://www.jpf.go.jp/e/jenesys/culture/exhibit/index.html
