Creative New Zealand and Leadership New Zealand today announced six full scholarships for artists to participate in the New Zealand Leadership Programme and the Mana Moana Experience programmes.
Two scholarships each will be available for Māori and Pasifika artists and arts practitioners in The New Zealand Leadership Programme and two scholarships for Pasifika arts leaders will be available in The Mana Moana Experience.
The scholarships are open to mid-career and senior Māori and Pasifika arts practitioners to develop their leadership skills while addressing key issues Aotearoa faces today.
On both programmes, participants will work alongside leaders from a diverse range of sectors across the country and be introduced to a wide range of resources, including: creative and design thinking methodologies; critical thinking; tools for increasing resilience and managing stress; leading through coaching and more.
Dean Whiting, Chair for Komiti Māori of the Arts Council, said, “It is vital that we continue to support Māori arts leaders with opportunities to extend their skills and experience, as well as further cement the immense value they bring to positions of leadership and influence.”

Arts Council Deputy Chair Caren Rangi says, “Supporting leadership opportunities for our Pasifika artists and arts practitioners is a key focus in Creative New Zealand’s Pacific Arts Strategy.”
“Our people have so much value to bring to leading the arts in Aotearoa, and this programme gives artists the chance to share their leadership skills and learn from a diverse range of leaders from other sectors.”
The scholarships are offered under both the Te Hā o ngā Toi Māori Arts Strategy 2019 – 2024 and Pacific Arts Strategy 2018 – 2023, ensuring that Creative New Zealand helps build a strong arts sector that advances ngā toi Māori aspirations, and that it strengthens Pacific-led arts groups, collectives and organisations with skilled and experienced leaders.

Background Information
About the New Zealand Leadership Programme
- The New Zealand Leadership Programme is an immersive year-long experience, involving a series of intensive multi-day training (including seminars, guest speakers, group exercises and self-reflection) over a 10-month period.
- Participants are carefully selected as mid-career, senior leaders from a range of sectors across New Zealand (eg health, education, creative, not-for-profit, business, local and central government).
- Each cohort is drawn from diverse backgrounds and sectors of the community to reflect a balance of profit/not-for-profit, private/public leaders, and a range of genders, ethnicity and regional representation, and are selected based on merit via an interview process. Places are limited to a maximum of 36 participants each year.
- The New Zealand Leadership Programme starts in February 2021.

About the Mana Moana Experience
- The Mana Moana Experience is a specialist Pasifika leadership programme that activates the rich wisdom of Pasifika ancestral and indigenous knowledge, so Pasifika leaders can confidently navigate their surrounding moana, fenua and ecosystems to locate and live the mauri of Pasifika leadership for a better Aotearoa New Zealand.
- An 8-month voyage of discovery, The Mana Moana Experience embeds the poly-cultural leadership wisdom required in these times, creating Pasifika conscious leaders — from government, business, creative and not-for-profit sectors — who understand how to leverage the power of the collective; bring their whole self to conversations; and sustain the vā that flows with reciprocity, empathy, respect and alofa.
- Pasifika leaders are defined as New Zealand residents who originate from, are descendants of, or who identify with a Pacific Island heritage, including: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.
- The Mana Moana Experience starts March 2021.
