2013 Venice Biennale dates announced

The 2013 Venice Biennale will take place from 1 June to 24 November, with the preview or vernissage from 29-31 May. Acclaimed sculptor, photographer and installation artist Bill Culbert will represent New Zealand at the 55th Venice Biennale.

The dates were announced by the Board of la Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta. Massimiliano Gioni is the Director of the Visual Arts section of la Biennale di Venezia and the curator of the 2013 Biennale.

Gioni is a curator and contemporary art critic. In 2010 he directed 10.000 Lives, the eighth Gwangju Art Biennale in South Korea. He was the youngest and first-ever European director of this contemporary art biennale, which attracted 500,000 visitors.

Massimiliano Gioni was curator of “La Zona” section at the 50th Venice Biennale. His experience as the artistic director of biennials and other international exhibitions includes the organization of Of Mice and Men – the fourth Berlin Biennale (2006) – and the fifth edition of the travelling art biennale, Manifesta (2004). He is also Associate Director of the New Museum in New York and the Artistic Director of the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in Milan.
