This is an excellent opportunity for an established visual artist from Aotearoa New Zealand to live and work in one of the world’s greatest art cities.

In 2025, textile-based artist, Areez Katki, took up the residency, continuing their research led practice exploring identity, migration and craft traditions.

Areez says they were grateful to Creative New Zealand for the resources they were able to access over their residency year.

“The residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien provides a really great base from which one can build meaningful relationships and projects. I found it helpful to hold onto one's centre, while remaining observant, kind and curious as the currents carry you.”

The residency includes a furnished apartment, a stipend and access to a vibrant international arts community to support your practice while in Berlin.

Areez says Berlin can be a thrilling and intense place.

“[The residency] provided me with the space, time and research material to further develop an experimental novel that is being framed within an exhibition trilogy.”

“Cultivating relationships with queer and creative peers made the place feel nurturing and full of possibility.”

“During the week, I'd be reading and writing every morning, at home or our local cafe; afternoons spent working at the studio; evenings with friends, often at galleries, lectures or social events. And Berghain (a Panorama Bar) most weekends.”

The first part of Areez’ trilogy, How to puncture the sky and hear the stones sing, was exhibited in 2025 at Künstlerhaus Bethanien.

Applications close: 1.00 PM (NZ time) on Thursday, 26 February 2026
