Creative New Zealand acknowledges the passing of Kiingi Tuheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII. Over many years we have had a long and mutually rewarding relationship with the Kingitanga. Most recently we were honoured to have Kiingi Tuheitia add his mana to the 2023 Te Waka Toi Awards with his presence at the ceremony in Waikato; his warmth and support of artists and Toi Māori was felt throughout the evening. In remembrance of his mother, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, he gifted us her name for the Te Waka Toi Supreme Award now known as He Tohu Aroha mō Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu. His support over the years extended to the Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture, where he created connections between Ariki across Te Moana nui a Kiwa. Held in the greatest esteem, we honour Kiingi Tuheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII's life of service to his land and people.
