While it has not been possible for visual arts and craft object curators to visit New Zealand in person, we’re lucky that we can still stay connected to them virtually and through sharing knowledge, information and publications.
In consultation with a number of New Zealand curators, we’ve recently distributed a selection of key visual arts and craft object publications to international curators, directors and libraries, to celebrate the extraordinary work being made here and to ensure that our artists remain top of mind.
The publications range from major publications relating to exhibitions and individual artists, and smaller independent publications and pamphlets, and were matched with curators based on their curatorial and programming interests.
These publications are finding their way out into the world. Sorcha Carey, Director of the Edinburgh Art Festival says,“I can’t thank you enough for the amazing set of publications, but also for thinking of it in the first place. It’s a wonderful way for us to keep in touch with what has been happening in your hemisphere. Only yesterday, I was talking about the international team and our very successful collaborations over the years. We miss you and your presence in the city enormously, and hope it won’t be too long before we can reconnect, and look to future opportunities to collaborate.”
“Being able to travel around the world, specifically to a country of such diversity before the epidemic hit, was truly a privilege! It would be wonderful to receive these publications at Amant for our library, so we can learn more about the scene there. The museum just opened one week ago but we are in the process of creating the programmes andare in conversation with artists. It couldn't be a better time to keep researching Aotearoa's artists and performers,” says Ruth Estévez, one of the curators for the 34th edition of the Bienal de São Paulo and head curator at the Amant Foundation (NYC). Ruth visited Aotearoa as a Creative New Zealand Te Manu Ka Tau guest in 2019.
