Funding | Pacific Arts Committe | Pacific Arts Promotion
The aim of the Pacific Arts Promotion funding programme is to develop the profile and an awareness of Pacific Islands arts and artists. If the aim of your project is the presentation, promotion or distribution of New Zealand Pacific art, or the development of audiences for New Zealand Pacific art, this is the funding programme to apply under.
Please note:
- Artists or arts practitioners with little or no record of achievement in their artform/area of expertise are unlikely to be funded.
- If your project focuses on local arts development or arts participation in the community it may be more appropriate to apply to the Creative Communities Scheme. (Local arts projects are community-based arts activities or those that have more impact at a local rather than a national level.)
Types of activities we can't fund
If you haven't already checked whether your project is eligible for funding, please work your way through Step 1: Can I apply? before you go any further. Here are some examples of activities or items we can't fund:
- equipment, uniforms and other capital items (e.g. computer, recording equipment, musical instruments)
- school cultural groups
- tutors' salaries
- the administrative cost of annual general meetings
- vehicle hire or domestic travel
- the cost of language nest resources
- the creation or maintenance of a website (except where the costs are linked to a specific, time-bound arts project)
- music video production.
If you're still not sure whether your project is eligible, please ask for help.
Pacific Arts Promotion funding programme
Under this programme, the Pacific Arts Committee recognises the importance of developing and supporting strategies for the effective marketing and promotion of Pacific Islands arts and artists. We're interested in exploring ways to develop national networks for each artform, and also in bridging the gap between contemporary and traditional Pacific Islands arts.
Types of activities we fund
- the national tour of a show
- publications
- presentation of work at an international festival
- attendance at a national or international conference or festival
- the cost of promotional material for an event or project
- costs towards holding a festival.
TOURING
Support may be provided for projects that involve touring or remounting an exhibition or performance. Priority will be given to projects with an element of joint investment and risk-sharing between presenters (e.g. venues, festivals) and producers (e.g. practitioners), and where there is a likelihood of establishing ongoing touring circuits and future markets for the work.
Support for international touring will be limited to travel and freight costs.
Types of activities we can't fund
As a general rule, the following will not be funded:
- overseas organisations presenting in New Zealand
- contests and competitions, unless there is a significant focus on accessing new audiences
- performing arts projects that demonstrate little evidence of demand (e.g. box-office income, fees from venues or presenters), unless they are part of a strategic programme for reaching new audiences or markets.
Assessment criteria
Your application will be assessed against the following criteria.
1: Good project planning
A strong application will provide a thorough project plan: please refer to the Application Workbook supplement.
2: Specific programme criteria
We will favour projects that:
- seek to raise the profile of Pacific Islands arts or artists
- focus on the promotion of Pacific Islands arts
- explore markets for Pacific Islands arts.
3. Opportunities for audiences and markets
A strong application will provide evidence of:
- opportunities for audiences to experience and understand new and innovative Pacific Islands work, nationally and internationally
- opportunities for audiences to experience artistically significant Pacific Islands work
- the project's potential to reach audiences that reflect New Zealand's cultural diversity
- the project's potential to reach communities with limited opportunities to experience professional arts*
- opportunities for audiences to experience Pacific Islands arts, in partnership with tangata whenua*
- the project's potential to involve young audiences.*
* Please note: factors with an asterisk will not necessarily apply to all projects.
Please note: Support for international touring will be limited to travel and freight costs.

Support material includes videos, DVDs, CDs, tapes, photos, articles, reviews, draft scripts, letters of recommendation, manuscripts and examples of your previous work.
Please note: do not send original copies of the material and clearly label all support material with the applicant's name and project as it appears on the application form.
